*तुजसाठी जनन ते मरण,*

*तुजविण जनन ते मरण |*

*तुज सकल चराचर शरण*

*स्वतंत्रते भगवती ||*

Tagore: A Man ahead of his Time

Just as he said, it's simple to be happy but difficult to be simple. He has inspired generations through his poems, plays and quotes to spread peace, happiness and wisdom. And we tend to treat him like a monument- a bearded sage carved in stone, meant to be revered but not really engaged with. Dusting off the mythology is when you find a man who was incredibly ahead of his time, Late Nobel Laureate, Shri. Rabindranath Tagore.

Take a look at how we view education today. We are finally realizing that castigating children in concrete boxes to endlessly memorize textbooks is breaking their intent to ever love what they learn. Tagore figured this issue a century ago. He realised that education is something which should be more of an experience than straightup learning. So he built 'Shantiniketan' because he believed learning should happen in the dirt, under trees, and in rhythm with the actual world. We call it "alternative learning" now; to him, it was just common sense.r

Then there’s his worldview. We live in an era obsessed with drawing hard lines between "us" and "them." Tagore saw the cracks in that mindset early on. He openly criticized the cult of false nationalism, warning that putting the idea of a nation above basic humanity was a deleterious and dreadful attempt to claim power. It was a deeply unpopular opinion then, and frankly, it still is. But as we grew as a nation, Indians relived the cause of 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam' because today, we as a country are actively pushing the philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, meaning 'the world is one family' on the global stage.

Even the women he wrote about, like Charulata or Binodini weren't just quiet, obedient props. They were messy, deeply flawed, and fiercely independent. They wrestled with their own desires in a society that heavily preferred them to be invisible.

We celebrate Gurudev as an icon of the past, but his ideas are painfully relevant right now. The truth is, we haven't outgrown Tagore at all. We're honestly still just trying to figure out how to live in the future he already saw.

The Nightingale of India

"Can ye measure the grief of the tears I weep

Or compass the woe of the watch I keep?”

Not just a poet, not just an activist, but the Nightingale of India, the voice of the citizens, and the strength of its women, Sarojini Naidu was truly one of a kind. Born on February 13, 1879, in Hyderabad, to a scientist-linguist and a poetess, language was bound in her blood. With her gift of poetry, she produced music, not in a literal sense, but by using her words, she created rhythm in her poems. In one of her renowned poems “The Gift of India” she discusses the martyred Indian soldiers of the First World War. She not only honors their sacrifice but also educates the people about the soldiers’ roles in providing protection.

The poems were the special thing about her, because they expressed the Indian sentiment, the nationalism felt not just by her, but by the vast majority of India. She wrote for the people. Aside from being a weaver of words, she was also a great orator. She advocated for freedom and for women’s rights across the globe, although the media records regarding most of her speeches are lost, her sentiments, her beliefs, and her persistence still reside in our hearts. “We want deeper sincerity of motive, a greater courage in speech and earnestness in action”, she said in one of her speeches.

The poem “Indian Weavers”, wherein the life of the weavers in India was portrayed, she uses the weavers and the hours of the day as metaphors for the journey of life. This poem particularly resonated with millions of her admirers, because it describes the vulnerability of life and the fragility of time.

But was poetry all she ever did? Definitely not. She advocated freedom, she delivered great speeches, and was an ambassador for the freedom struggle of India abroad. She was a fierce, witty woman who never hesitated to stand up for the injustice faced by Indians. Even in the freedom struggle, she never backed away, she led protests even when the other freedom fighters were being arrested left and right. She joined the Indian National Congress, became its first female President, and later the first woman Governor of an Indian state (Uttar Pradesh). This strengthened her movement in the struggle for women’s rights. Becoming the first female Governor inspired many girls, teaching them that women can do something as well as anyone else can.

Padmaja Naidu’s biggest inspiration was her mother, Sarojini Naidu. “A living embodiment of courage and compassion” were the words used by her daughter to describe her.

“Words must serve action, and action must serve humanity” was Sarojini’s advice to her daughter as remembered by her. That is why not only Padmaja, but also other pivotal women like Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit (the first Indian and the first female President of the United Nations General Assembly), and many other female freedom fighters chose Sarojini Naidu as their inspiration.

Finally, a day that all the citizens of India should know is the thirteenth of February not simply because it is Sarojini Naidu’s birth anniversary, but also because it is celebrated as the National Women’s Day, because of her efforts and her role in fighting for women’s rights in society. Through her wit and her words, through her confidence and her resilience, she taught us how to soar in the sky of freedom and patriotism, with words and rhythms.

Oscar Wilde: The Man Who Lived His Metaphor

"All art is quite useless" this seemingly somewhat odd sentence is the most important sentence in the preface of a literary gem we call 'The Picture of Dorian Gray', a bestselling novel by none other than: Oscar Wilde. So who exactly was this Oscar Wilde?

Born on the 16th of October, 1854 in Ireland, originally 'Oscar Fingal O'Flahertie Wills Wilde' was a noteworthy figure in the world of literature, known mainly for his flamboyant personality and extravagant style of writing. He lived a life of much fame and comfort until a scandal led to his downfall.

Regardless of his follies, the entire world hails him as one of the finest writers due to his one and only novel published- 'The Picture of Dorian Gray'. In it, he discusses the unspoken aspect of beauty, hideousness of the human character and criticizes society in a satirical manner throughout the novel with Dorian Gray and Mr. Basil at its center, as the main characters. Through the complex weaving of a twisted tale, in this novel, Oscar Wilde holds a mirror up to our own society and calls out the rotten means of materialism and the sins of men. What struck me as fascinating the first time I read this novel was the relatability of it even today. For something written in the 19th century, it sure stirs up modern episodes in your memory. One of my personal favorite lines from the book as I remember it is, "Nowadays people know the price of everything and the value of nothing".

He has published other works and mainly plays like 'The Importance of Being Earnest' and 'A Woman of No Importance'. Other than these famous plays, he also wrote a classic children's story which all of us are familiar with, 'The Happy Prince'.

His works are to this day capable of invoking strong human sentiment, including shame and guilt at the condition of the world, while also making books an enjoyable experience through the most common yet rich dialogue that makes us feel connected to the characters in his works.

A man of Irish descent, that too born to a well off family and having earned multiple degrees in literature surely wrote of the rich in the 1800's, but this misconception won't take much time to stand out of the way when you realize he wrote fairly and understandingly of all the classes and people. Though in some of his works, I noticed the absence of strong female leads, his other works like 'Women of No Importance’ fill those gaps out efficiently.

Strained by the rigorous inhumane laws of Victorian society, Oscar Wilde lived his final days in poverty after being released from imprisonment due to a questionable affair with a man of high society. The sheer experience of poverty and being cast out inspired his poem 'The Ballad of Reading Gaol'. He died on November 30th, 1900 in his exile city Paris.

A very famous rumor goes, his last words were "Either this wallpaper goes or I do". While some speculate this to be ridiculous, ardent fans of the writer say, considering his general level of seriousness to life, it is most plausible he actually said that. Regardless of these speculations, one thing that I can confidently say is, Oscar Wilde was a genius when it came to writing and a most revered author for the right reasons.

"To live is the rarest thing of all, most people exist that's all"

-Oscar Wilde.

With that said, let us try living to the fullest, a life as rich with stories to tell as Mr. Wilde, as we remember him on his birth anniversary.
