Polymers of Our Progress

On this auspicious occasion of World Environment Day, let’s take a moment to delve in one of the strangest “Evolutionary” headlines you could imagine.

Breaking News! Slowly yet surely, humans have become the only animals who have shown the signs of digesting plastic without any side effects? Apparently, the new generation Beta, has begun adapting to the amount of plastic we consume, and slowly, maybe a few years later, our descendants will be able to digest it completely and make it biodegradable. Ironically, the ones who were contaminating the food chain, will now fix it. This ‘discovery’ has brought relief to countless plastic producers and recyclers.

Did you believe it? If you fell for it, welcome to the club. As plastic disposal remains an unsolved burning issue and masses are worried about the undisposable nature of this wretched material, despite the fact that none are actually concerned. People want a magical solution for its disposal. Moreover, microplastic is an even larger, yet oddly obscure, issue quietly bide their time to wreak havoc on our lives.

From food to fashion, from industry to medication. Microplastic has a wide reach. And wherever it reaches, it acts like a horcrux of plastic, making it immortal.

But what is microplastic? One widely accepted definition describes it as any plastic fragment between 1 nanometer and 5 millimeters in width. One nanometer is just a fraction of the width of a human hair, and 5 millimeters is about the width of a wedding ring.

Globally, an estimated 11 million tonnes of plastic waste leak into aquatic ecosystems each year, while microplastics accumulate in the soil from sewage and landfills due to the use of plastics in agricultural products. According to the UN Environment Programme, one estimate indicated that 2.7 million tonnes of microplastics seeped into the environment in 2020. This estimate is expected to double by 2040.

But what's the deal with microplastic today? On the occasion of World Environment Day, the spotlight turns to microplastic, on the theme of "Beat Plastic Pollution", a crisis whose reach has become dangerously widespread. Research says, from soil to air, from the rivers to the human blood, and from Mount Everest to the Mariana Trench. Microplastic has contaminated everything. And the worst part is it's affecting if it gets majorly accumulated. The leaching microplastic into oceans contaminates the aquatic life, which later contaminates food which humans and other organisms consume.

"As you sow, so shall you reap." A simple principle of Mother Nature. Easy to understand, easy to forget, but ruthlessly real.

But then what's the solution to this Microplastic dilemma? It would've been a magical solution if humans would've miraculously begun digesting plastic and rendering it biodegradable. But that’s just wishful thinking.

Nevertheless, the best possible solution can be rethinking a sustainable path with the help of a circular economy for plastic, meaning we need to rethink how we design, make, use and reuse plastics. Products must be designed to be used more than once, and to be recycled at the end of their life. This shift must involve everyone in the plastics value chain. A just transition is key to safeguarding waste pickers’ livelihoods and ensuring social fairness, leaving no one behind.

Green Hydrogen: Game-Changer For the Future of Fuels?

“Green hydrogen is emerging as a promising addition to the world’s energy landscape.”
-Narendra Modi

According to the Standford University, there’d still be gas and coal left by the time oil runs out in 2052. But if gas production is increased to fill the energy gap left by oil, then those reserves will only give an additional eight years, taking us to 2060. Therefore, as PM Modi says, “the time for action is here and now". The fact is humans currently possess the technology to utilize hydrogen fuel instead of fossil fuels, but the technology is on the primary stage. The technology, which is not on the primary stage is electric automotives. But considering their less efficiency, leaching occurring due to the lithium-ion battery, and their negative environmental production-friendly techniques, they are (no offence) useless. The International Conference on Green Hydrogen was established by various stakeholders in the energy and environmental sectors, government bodies, international organisations, and industry leaders. The significance of this conference was to strengthen the green hydrogen agenda, facilitate global collaboration, and drive progress toward a sustainable energy future.

At the conference, PM Narendra Modi emphasized the growing realization that climate change is not just a matter of the future, but its impact can be felt now. He said that energy transition and sustainability have become central to global policy discourse. The Prime Minister briefed that India was among the first G-20 nations to fulfill its Paris commitments on green energy. He said these commitments were fulfilled nine years ahead of the target of 2030. Throwing light on the advancements in the past 10 years, the Prime Minister said that India’s installed non-fossil fuel capacity increased nearly 300% and solar energy capacity got over a 3,000% boost. PM Modi underlined that we are not resting on these achievements and the nation remains focused on strengthening existing solutions while also looking at new and innovative areas, saying this is where the of green hydrogen comes into the picture.

There were 25 key speakers at the conference, including Dr. Sunita Satyapal, Director of Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies at the U.S. Department of Energy; Prof. G. D. Yadav, a distinguished professor from the Institute of Chemical Technology; Dr. Sachchida Nand, a leader in chemical engineering from IIT Bombay; and international figures like Bernt Nordman, head of Climate Program at WWF Finland; Mr. Gan Kim Yong, Deputy Prime Minister of Singapore; and Jorgo Chatzimarkakis, CEO of Hydrogen Europe.

The discussions emphasised the use of electrolysers and better use of sea water and municipal waste water for producing green hydrogen. Key areas of focus involved innovation in hydrogen storage solutions and the decarbonisation of hard-to-electrify industries such as steel, refineries, and heavy-duty transportation. The potential for green jobs was discussed, and skill enhancement in green hydrogen technology was a key note of the conference. Discussions on investment in research, development, and infrastructure of green hydrogen were followed.

International partnership is critical for promoting green hydrogen’s impact on decarbonization. Scaling up production, minimizing costs, and building infrastructure can happen faster through global cooperation. India is willing to become the global hub for the production, utilization, and export of green hydrogen. The National Green Hydrogen Mission is giving an impetus to innovation, infrastructure, industry, and investment. Experts discussed the need for public policy support, urging scientists and innovators to propose changes that would further boost the sector. This includes the creation of regulatory frameworks that support green hydrogen adoption in public transport, shipping, and other sectors. The role of green hydrogen in achieving climate goals was underscored, with discussions on how hydrogen can contribute to reducing global carbon footprints and help nations fulfill their commitments under international climate agreements.

The UAE's Encounter with Extreme Weather and Climate Change

The United Arab Emirates has been hit by heavy thunderstorms, resulting in the heaviest rainfall ever recorded within hours. This downpour flooded major highways, Dubai's international airport, homes, and malls. Operations at the airport were briefly halted. In Oman, at least 18 people lost their lives due to the storms. The rainfall, ranging from 127mm to 254mm in different parts of the UAE within 24 hours, has been described as a "historic weather event" surpassing records since 1949. Dubai faces severe flooding, with the amount of rain received in a single day equaling what typically falls over 1.5 years. Experts attribute this extreme weather to a normal weather system intensified by climate change, rather than just a cloud-seeding experiment. Cloud seeding is a process in which chemicals are implanted into clouds to increase rainfall in an environment where water scarcity is a concern. The UAE, located in one of the hottest and driest regions on earth, has been leading the effort to seed clouds and increase precipitation. A low-pressure system in the upper atmosphere, coupled with low pressure at the surface had acted like a pressure 'squeeze' on the air.

Scientists say that the intense weather changed into because of an extraordinary conjunction of climate systems bringing moisture from the Gulf, Arabian Sea, and Mediterranean. The flooding prompted chaos in a metropolis unaccustomed and unprepared for such conditions. Major avenue tunnels packed with water, bring transportation to a standstill. Water poured into purchasing department shops, residential regions, and construction websites. Due to the saturation of water on the roads, many cars have been damaged totally. They also lost their business of oil extraction and tourism during the period, which is a major source of revenue for the country. UAE has announced $544mn (2bn dirhams) for repairing homes. They also exempted people from various fines that were levied during this period, ranging from various traffic violation fines to fines for staying in the country after the visa period was over, as people had to wait in UAE as the aviation services had to be temporarily closed down.

Fortunately, the UAE's sturdy infrastructure and emergency planning prevented any catastrophic harm or lack of existence. However, the economic toll from the floods is predicted to be giant, with initial estimates in the billions of dirhams from businesses being closed down and belongings harm. Climate scientists caution that the UAE wishes to put together extra extreme weather activities like this in the future because of weather exchange. While the desolate tract place may absolutely become even hotter and drier on average, extended evaporation can also lead to extra excessive rain storms when conditions are right. The Dubai floods had been a stark reminder that even towns with terrific engineering prowess may be brought to their knees by effective herbal forces. As the arena continues warming, no nook of the globe might be immune to capability climate disruptions.
