If I had asked a question to layman Indian about the number of Indian athletes they know 10 years ago, the first 10-20 names of the athletes would come from the men’s cricket sector, then supposedly the likes of ‘Milkha Singh,’ ‘Abhinav Bindra,’ ‘Sania Mirza,’ (for mostly the wrong reasons) and ‘Major Dhyanchand,’ (very very unlikely but we hope) would be the first few names one could recall from the other sector of the sports sector in India. The fact that these names would have had fewer women athletes, was more concerning.

Indian Economy After 75 Years of Independence
India gained independence on the 15th of August, 1947.
After attaining political freedom, the founders of India had a really difficult
path in front of them. The British colonial rule had left India an illiterate
and poverty-ravaged country. From being one of the richest countries in the
south of Asia to being one of the poorest, the colonial rule had really hurt
the Indian economy. But after gaining independence the founding fathers dreamt
of a self-reliant, booming economy for India and so did the citizens.
75 years have passed and a lot has changed. India as an economy has faced several challenges, many ups and down. The journey to becoming the sixth largest country in the world in terms of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) hasn’t been an easy one. We have faced famines, floods, wars, and near bankruptcy. But all these obstacles have only made India a stronger economy and we have only learned from our mistakes.
Over the years, India has grown in stature and respect. Once known as a third-world country, India is among one of the biggest economies in the world. From having to import food grains to now not only being self-sufficient but also exporting them. India has seen one of the successful green revolutions. India has witnessed tremendous growth in the fields of science and technology, IT, and medicine. IT exports stood at a whopping US $149 billion for the financial year 2021. We are also known as the pharmacy of the world. From a country that was taken lightly and was on the verge of bankruptcy only a few decades ago, we are now one of the biggest powers in the world with a billion-dollar market.
The shift from a socialist economy to a more liberal, capitalist economy has been one of the major reasons for the changes in the Indian economy. Until the economic reforms of 1991, the public sector in India remained dominant. Start-ups, businesses, and entrepreneurship were words unknown to the vast majority of Indian citizens. These were occupations reserved for the rich and the upper middle class. Getting a job in a company was the end goal. Nothing could top a government job. But over the years this attitude has changed, people are more interested in self-employment and opening up their businesses and an exponential increase in the number of start-ups being set up is a testament to that. Currently, we have 75,000 start-ups in our country, 100 of which are start-ups that value over $1 billion US dollars, making them unicorns. India is only after the USA and China when it comes to the number of unicorns in the country. India’s gross domestic product (GDP) was a mere 2.7 lakh crore at the time of Independence, 75 years later, the GDP stands at a staggering $3.17 trillion.
India today is a force to reckon with, we are self-sufficient developing country making progress in all fields with a bright future to look forward to. Economic growth and prosperity not only better the lives of the citizens of a particular country but also earn the country respect in the international community. In these 75 years, the respect for India has only grown. While earlier we were known as a peace-loving nation, today we are known for much more. We are known for our self-reliance, technological advancements, markets, and much more. India commands respect at all international tables today.
Looking back 75 years and we’ve done extremely well
for ourselves. There is still a lot of work that needs to be done but we can
take a pause, breathe a little and be proud of being Indian citizens.

Looking Back at 75 Glorious Years of Independence
The word
independence literally means, freedom from being governed or ruled by another
country. India officially became independent from British rule on 15th
August 1947. East India Company, which docked its ships at Surat in Gujrat in
1608, for trading purposes. Now, who would have thought that this company was
going to stay here for quite a period of time.
Innumerable
number of people fought for the freedom of HINDUSTAN which at that time
included present day, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Tibet,
Afghanistan and some Autonomous regions. Today this land distribution is known
as “Akhanda Bharat" or “Akhanda Hindustan”. Although, interestingly
enough, the first actual revolution against the British rule took place in
1857, led by, Rani Laksmi Bai, the Queen of Jhansi. Since then, till 15th
August 1947 many sung and unsung heroes have participated for our independence.
This year, 2022 marks 75 years of our Independence, hence also known as “Azadi
ka Amrit Mahotsav”.
So much has
changed since then, right?! Indian culture today is way more diverse and augment
than it was. India has always been known for its rich culture, diversity and
secularity and I believe these identities will always remain with us along with
all the upcoming. Since, seventy-five years our nation has been progressing in
all possible forms. As said by our older generations, India is witnessing rapid
changes in all fields. For instance, economy of India, in 1947 the GDP of India
was Rs. 2.7 lakh crore and seventy-four years on, it has reached Rs. 135.13
lakh crore, which is incredible, given the population and the challenges faced
by our nation over the years. Reserved Bank of India also predicts that, we
will be the second largest economy by 2023 if we strike a growth rate of 11%.
India is
also witnessing progress in fields like life sciences, industrial technology,
liberal arts, astronomy, commerce, psychology, biotechnology, meteorology,
geography, political sciences and many more. Research and development in these
fields is obviously beneficial for welfare of the society. We are the youth,
the future of our nation, we should be proud and working hard to make the
future of India more prosperous, and secure. Independence Day gives sense of
unity in diversity to the entire nation because since independence, India as a
whole has definitely faced many challenges, but so has each and every state and
districts. On the occasion of “Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav” the government of India
has requested everyone to hoist our flag, the “Tiranga" at our respective
houses too, as, “Tiranga" also represents unity in diversity.
India, is
not only culturally diverse but, is also blessed with a beautiful biodiversity.
From The Himalayas in the north, to the splendid 7,516.6 km of coastline along
the entire peninsular region till Andaman and Nicobar Island at the southern
most of our country, we have everything covered from tropical forests, desert
region, deltas, Sahyadris, and numerous rivers and lakes. Great architectural
monuments such as Taj Mahal, temples in Hampi, Konark, Madurai, Puri,
Bhubhaneshwar, Balaji; ancient castles and forts, Monasteries in North-eastern
parts, archeologically important places such as Dwarka, India is truly
incredible.
Yes, India has also experienced a journey from being the “Sone ki Chideya” to a still “developing” country, I believe that, with the right steps, confidence and cooperation of everyone, we can once again go back to being the “Sone ki Chideya”. This year onwards let us become responsible again, and make our country truly “Incredible”.
Jai Hind.
